New Zealand has received a formal request from the United States for more help to fight terrorism following the attacks in Paris in November last year.

The request was revealed in a heavily redacted review of New Zealand's training mission in Iraq, which concludes the deployment is having a tangible and positive impact in helping the Iraqi Army to fight Islamic State.

It says the operational threat level to New Zealanders deployed to Iraq remains "high".

The review also revealed the United States asked New Zealand, and several other coalition partners, for additional contributions to counter-terrorism efforts, following the Paris attacks.

Other details of the request and New Zealand's response have been blacked out.
