Doctor accused of assault can still treat patients

A doctor accused of stupefying and indecently assaulting patients will be able to continue treating patients for two more weeks after a ruling by the High Court yesterday.

The doctor, whose name is suppressed, faces criminal proceedings over five charges of stupefying patients and eight of indecent assault.

In February the Wellington District Court dismissed his appeal against a Medical Council plan to suspend his practising certificate.

Yesterday Justice Toogood backed that and rejected an application by the doctor for leave to appeal again.

However he has allowed him to continue seeing patients under certain conditions until 11 April to allow his employer time to plan alternative patient care.
