A man has been left with serious injuries after he was charged by a steer in cattle yards near Taihape.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter service said two men were trying to climb out of the yards when the steer charged them this morning.

It tossed a local man, in his fifties, over the rails and he landed on his head.

He was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a stable condition.
