Part of the Christchurch suburb of Spreydon had to be evacuated this morning while a suspected bomb was made safe.
The bomb was found when relatives were sorting through their elderly father's belongings.
They called the police, who in turn brought in a Defence Force bomb squad to disarm the shell.
On closer inspection the bomb turned out to be an old army training shell.
Sergeant Richard Carolan said the man's family did the right thing and nobody should try to move a suspected bomb themselves.
