Close call for cyclists on New Plymouth railway

1:51 pm on 21 January 2016

A train driver has reported a near-miss involving cyclists on the same stretch of railway in New Plymouth where a pedestrian was killed earlier this month.

Matthew Meijer was hit by a train at a crossing near Weymouth St on 11 January.

Today a train had to sound its horn as two cyclists crossed at Tasman Prospect on the popular Coastal Walkway.

KiwiRail manager David Gordon said people could underestimate the speed of an oncoming train, and should not cross in front of one.

Following Mr Meijer's death, vegetation is being removed from crossings at Weymouth Street and Tasman Prospect.
