Residents return home after Napier scrub fire forced them out

9:16 am on 16 January 2016

Residents have been allowed back into their homes after a scrub fire on the outskirts of Napier forced them to evacuate yesterday afternoon.

Three helicopters with monsoon buckets were needed to help douse the blaze, which spread across nearly 100 hectares at Poraiti, near Taradale.

Regional fire commander Chris Nichol said the hilly terrain and temperatures over 30 degrees made it difficult to put out.

Investigators will arrive later this morning to try to determine the cause of the fire.
