Police are urging motorists to drive slowly on State Highway One in Oamaru after a diesel spill.
A police spokesman said it looked like a vehicle travelling in the north bound lane had a leak which was now being spread by heavy rain.
He said the road was slippery and drivers should avoid it if they can.
