A man on a canyoning trip has been rescued from a steep gorge in Abel Tasman National Park after slipping on rocks and badly injuring his leg.

His tour guides called in a helicopter when he fell in the Torrent River, near Torrent Bay.

Dense forest meant the aircraft was unable to land, so the on-board paramedic was winched down to treat the injured man before airlifting him to Nelson Hospital.
