Residents in the Bay of Plenty town of Mamaku are being asked to urgently reduce water use after the main pump feeding the town's water supply failed last night.
The Rotorua Lakes Council says if water use is not urgently reduced, there will be a loss of water supply.
Water operations manager Eric Cawte says it is currently using a backup system which cannot keep up with the high demand.
The council will let the public know when the main system is back in order.
