Australian supermarket giant Woolworths - the parent of the Countdown chain of shops in New Zealand - says it is opening an online store on the Chinese website Tmall.

Countdown has had an online shop in New Zealand for 20 years but Woolworths said the latest venture was a bid to defend its business in China.

Customers have been on-selling its products in China, and Woolworths has responded by directly selling 80 products - including powdered milk, baby formula and vitamins.
