Christchurch Art Gallery has re-opened today almost five years after it was shut because of earthquake damage.
The gallery became the hub for the Civil Defence response after the February 2011 earthquake, and soon afterwards was closed when it became clear the land under the building had suffered major damage.
Almost $60 million has been spent on repairs, including installing base isolation and re-levelling the floors.
Gallery director Jenny Harper said the work was essential to reassure overseas galleries it is safe to send work to Christchurch.
