Deputy mayor of Whanganui Hamish McDouall has announced he will stand for mayor at next year's local body elections.
Current mayor Annette Main announced at the weekend she would not seek re-election.
Mr McDouall, a lawyer and author, said creating jobs, finding funding for rural roads, and paying for the city's new wastewater plant were some of the most pressing issues facing Whanganui.
