The Christchurch City Council has voted to proceed with a $20 million engineering project to prevent flooding in large parts of the city's eastern suburbs.
Aranui, Wainoni, Linwood and Woolston are all more susceptible to flooding because the land dropped during the earthquakes.
The work to better protect these areas includes repairing and improving drains, and building pump stations to remove water.
The council has already allocated $42 million for engineering works in the area known as Flockton Basin, to reduce the impact of flooding there, after that area also dropped.
