Obama rejects plans for Canada-US oil pipeline

6:27 pm on 7 November 2015

United States president Barack Obama has rejected controversial plans to build an oil pipeline from Canada to the southern coast of the United States.

He said he agreed with a recommendation by the state department that the Keystone XL pipeline would not make a meaningful long-term contribution to the US economy.

The Obama administration is understood to believe that approving the project would have undermined the US stance on climate change, particularly with the Paris conference on climate change coming up at the end of the month.

Mr Obama also said it would not have helped to lower petrol prices for American motorists, nor would it have created many jobs.
