A person is dead after being hit by a freight train in the Tauranga suburb of Otumoetai at 3.10pm.
St John said it did not have any other details.
KiwiRail knows about the incident and is working to find more information about what happened, it says.
It says the train driver is shaken and will be given time off and support.
The train was travelling to Tauranga from Auckland.
