Nelson police say a section of state highway 60 near Mapua is closed after powerlines came down, trapping four vehicles.
Traffic diversions are in place on the Coastal Highway.
A police spokesperson said it was believed the lines were brought down by a tree being felled in the area.
No one in the vehicles involved was injured.
