Fatal punch victim walked away after lethal blow

1:38 pm on 7 September 2015

The Crown says a man who was punched on an Auckland street got up and walked away, but died a day and a half later.

Israel Te Amo has denied a charge of manslaughter and is on trial at the High Court in Auckland.

Crown prosecutor John Dixon said Mr Te Amo came across Darryl Nicholson on a street in Orakei in 2012.

He said Mr Nicholson called Mr Te Amo a name as a joke. Mr Te Amo punched him in the jaw and knocked him to the ground.

Mr Dixon said Mr Te Amo had to be held back by a friend from continuing with the violence and left shortly afterwards.

The prosecutor said Mr Nicholson got up and brushed himself off and left too.

Over the following day and a half, bleeding on his brain caused swelling and Mr Nicholson died.
