Solicitor-General Michael Heron, QC, is stepping down after three years in the role.
Attorney-General Chris Finlayson said Mr Heron had decided to spend more time with his family but would stay on until his replacement was appointed.
The State Services Commission will appoint a new Solicitor-General.
