Netsafe numbers point to problems with excessive internet use by teens

From The Panel, 4:15 pm on 21 January 2020

Alarming figures from Netsafe show that around half of New Zealand teenagers have come into conflict with friends or whanau because of the amount of time they spend online.

The organisation looked into internet use among youngsters aged between 13 and 17.

As well as reporting conflict, 26 percent in the survey also admitted that their school results had taken a blow because of the amount of time they were online. Another 32 percent said they went without food or sleep in order to spend time online.

Netsafe CEO Martin Cocker says the numbers are a wake up call for parents and caregivers to set boundaries on internet use.
