Suicide rate at 10-year high

New Zealand had the highest number of suicides in 10 years in 2016. Ministry of Health figures show 553 people died by suicide in 2016 and young people aged 15-24 years had the highest rate of suicide with 16.8 per 100,000. The statistics for Maori men is especially grim at nearly 32 per 100,000, more than twice that of the non-Maori men. Michael Naera of the Mental Health Foundation discusses this tragedy and possible ways to help prevent these deaths.
