09:05 Deer stalking hunter kills woman

Rosemary Ives was shot dead at a Department of Conservation campsite south of Turangi on Friday night while brushing her teeth. It is understood a man with a rifle, who was spotlighting in the area, mistakenly thought she was a deer. A Hamilton man has been charged with careless use of a firearm and is due to appear in the Taupo District Court tomorrow.

09:25 Banning gang patches

Gang patches and other insignia were banned in Whanganui from July last year, after a law giving police the power to arrest, seize and fine wearers was passed in Parliament in May. A police report in July this year estimated that there were 15% fewer serious patched gang members living in Whanganui since the by-law was passed.
