Christopher Luxon suggests National Party wants changes to bipartisan housing accord

From Morning Report, 7:37 am on 1 December 2021

Newly minted National Party leader Christopher Luxon has signalled the party wants to make changes to the bipartisan housing accord his deputy Nicola Willis set up with Labour.

Luxon told Morning Report MPs need to hear feedback on the Bill and will seek to make amendments.

"We entered that in good faith. What happens is the Bill goes through first reading, goes to a select committee, you hear from local government experts, residents, etc.

"There are two big things that have really come out of that. The first is really around the design guidelines and standards of new developments, so things like height, ratios on borders. The second thing is actually local government playing back about how they have more discretion about where intensification can happen. I think we really, genuinely need to listen to that feedback."

He said Willis, who was an architect of the accord, has been involved in listening to the feedback and will be part of the party's response to the feedback on the Bill.
