Power outages: Market clearly not working for NZers on Monday - Megan Woods

From Morning Report, 7:27 am on 11 August 2021

The finger pointing continues as to who was to blame for the estimated 28,000 people losing power on Monday.

Energy Minister Megan Woods told Morning Report there was a clear failure in the market on that night, one of the coldest of 2021.

"The market did not work for New Zealanders on Monday night. The lights went out and they couldn't put the haters on. I think that is patently obvious to everybody."

She said she is looking into what happened, including whether there could have been a breakdown in communication between Transpower and operators when it became clear during the there was going to be increased need for power in the evening.

She is adamant it was not a problem about whether there was enough generation capacity.

"The decision was made not to bring on the Taranaki Combined Cycle, because that takes three or so days to bring on. So, we did have more gas generations that could have been brought on. It is not a scarcity of gas.

"The third rankine at Huntly takes six to 10 hours to fire up, the warning first went out from transpower at 6:42am saying we're going to need more.

"Now I want to know what the nature of that communication was. Was it communicated in a way that people thought: 'Right, we really do need to bring things on.'"
