Government must wake up to risk of shutting Marsden Pt refining

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 5 August 2021

Energy security analysts warn New Zealand is failing to weigh the risks to fuel supplies from shutting down its only oil refinery.

Shareholders in the Marsden Pt refinery vote on Friday on whether to turn it into an import only terminal that does no more refining.

Australia has shut eight refineries since 2010, and its Government is now paying up to $2 billion dollars to save the remaining two.

Dr John Coyne of the Northern Australia Strategic Policy Centre says the New Zealand Government needs to wake up, too.
