Royal Commission into Abuse in Care: Government still not helping victims - Lake Alice survivor

From Morning Report, 8:21 am on 25 June 2021

A survivor of Lake Alice Psychiatric Hospital who took his complaints to the United Nations says the government here is still not helping victims.

In the 1970s, then 13-year-old Paul Zentfeld was put in in the adolescent unit, and ended up spending more than a year there.

In 2019, prompted by Zentfeld and others, the UN Committee Against Torture ruled an urgent investigation was needed into the allegations of torture and abuse at Lake Alice.

Not long after the UN report came out the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care announced it would investigate.

Two years on it is at a public hearing in Auckland.
