Government called on to consider independent overseer for counter-terrorism law

From Morning Report, 7:25 am on 15 April 2021

The government is being asked to consider appointing an independent person to review how counter-terrorism laws are operated in New Zealand.

Justice Minister Kris Faafoi introduced the Counter-Terrorrism Legislation Bill on Tuesday, which seeks to add several terrorism offences to law.

John Ip, a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland specialising in counter terrorism, says the bill is as expected, but the government should consider what oversights could be put in place.

He told Ben Strang there is precedent overseas.
