Covid-19: Police prosecute nearly 1000 lockdown rule breaches

From Morning Report, 6:37 am on 4 March 2021

The police have now prosecuted nearly a thousand Covid-19 related breaches, but haven't been called in recently to investigate those who may have defied isolation or testing orders.

Twenty to 30 year olds are the worst offenders, responsible for 40 percent of breaches; add in the 30 to 40 year olds and between them they make up nearly 70 percent.

About three quarters are men.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster told RNZ political editor Jane Patterson to potentially prosecute in situations covered by a health order - for example a directive to self isolate or get tested - health officials have to start the ball rolling.

The police can take direct action in cases of clear breaches of alert level restrictions though.
