Auckland Council Maori Statutory Board member wants elected representatives

From Morning Report, 6:17 am on 20 November 2020

The chairman of an independent board facilitating Māori interests in Auckland Council says the supercity has led to greater engagement with Maori, but there is still more to do.

This month marks 10 years since the Auckland Supercity was formed.

At the time, establishing separate Māori seats on the Council were recommended, but that was later watered down, and an Independent Māori Statutory Board was established instead.

The Board's chairman David Taipari, told Auckland Council reporter Jean Bell the Supercity has led to better inclusion of Māori perspectives, but the work is not over.

He thinks elected Māori representatives should be introduced.
