A week out from the United States election and a senior aide to president Donald Trump has conceded that the country is "not going to control the pandemic".
In a stark admission, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows instead says Covid-19 can only be beaten by vaccines and therapeutics, rejecting the lockdown methodology used elsewhere globally.
In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Meadows said control of the virus was not a realistic goal.
