Students at Otago are fighting a proposal from the university to limit the number of medical school admissions for Māori students through its Māori entry pathway.
The pathway - which currently has no limit - was designed to boost the number of Māori in the health work force.
RNZ understands the cap could be 56 students a year, and even less for other minority entry pathways.
