Couple stuck in Falklands return home via fishing vessel

From Morning Report, 8:53 am on 3 August 2020

A newly wed Auckland couple who were stranded in the Falklands for four months are almost home, thanks to a lift from a fishing vessel.

Feeonaa and Neville Clifton left for their honeymoon at the start of March with plans to head on to South America, but their travel options dried up when international borders started closing.

After finding no luck with a flight home, they managed to secure passage with a Sanford fishing boat that came to drop off and collect crews also stranded nearby.

Feeonaa Clifton told RNZ reporter Harriet Robinson she'd never spent a night at sea before, but quickly found her sea legs.

They are expected to be allowed to disembark on tomorrow morning, once their Covid-19 tests return negative.
