Horticulture industry on migration changes

From Morning Report, 7:16 am on 28 July 2020

News of the changes to stop the exploitation of migrants comes a day after the sentencing of Joseph Auga Matamata, the first person in New Zealand to be convicted of both human trafficking and slavery.

Over several decades, Matamata lured Samoan workers to New Zealand with the promise of horticultural work, before withholding payment, and assaulting them when they did not follow his instructions.

The Minister responsible, Kris Faafoi, was unable to come on Morning Report.

Gary Jones is New Zealand Apples and Pears' business development manager.

He speaks to Susie Ferguson.
