Christchurch Airport planning new location in Central Otago

From Morning Report, 8:46 am on 23 July 2020

News that an airport could be constructed near the town of Tarras in Central Otago has taken locals by surprise.

Christchurch Airport yesterday revealed it had already spent $45m on the project, including purchasing land.

At this stage the plan is to construct a two-point-two 2.2 kilometre runway capable of accomodating jet aircraft - which would put the new airport in competition with the one in Queenstown, just over an hour away.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns told Checkpoint the airport was the realization of long-term plans for the region.

Tim Cadogan, the mayor of Central Otago, speaks to Susie Ferguson.
