There's bad news for schools struggling with the teacher shortage - the number of new teacher trainees has been falling, despite last year's pay settlements.
Education Ministry figures show new primary and secondary teaching enrolments fell in 2019 and enrolments reported to RNZ indicate another drop for primary this year and a small recovery for secondary.
The only bright spot is the recession could actually ensure that next year's enrolments will be a lot better.
