Pushback expected from fuel companies after report - Minister

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 21 August 2019

Cut-price petrol company Gull is urging the government to free up the fuel market to bring in genuine competition.

This follows a draft report released by the Commerce Commission yesterday that said the big three oil firms - Z Energy, BP and Mobil - are making too much profit, and consumers are probably losing out.

Gull's general manager Dave Bodger wants the same system that operates in Australia.

Mr Bodger says that means petrol companies storing fuel at a wharf must sell to anyone who drives up with their own tanker and wants to fill up. But what exactly is going to be done about it, and when?

Commerce & Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi spoke to Susie Ferguson about the commission's preliminary findings.
