China's government is attempting to play down Google's suspension of co-operation with Huawei, a development that's likely to have major consequences for the Chinese telecommunications firm.
Google on Monday began to limit the software services it provides the company following a White House order last week that restricted the Chinese company's access to American technology.
Google's software powers Huawei's smartphones, and its apps come preloaded on the devices. Google has cut the phone maker Huawei off from some updates to the Android operating system meaning new Huawei smartphones will lose access to popular Google apps such as YouTube and Maps.
The Chinese foreign ministry has been cautious in its response. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang asked the US to backtrack.
Technology commentator Paul Brislen tells Corin Dann the changes could mean that Huawei phones are not secure and therefore not safe to use.
