The Waikato River Authority says a deal to allow Auckland City to take more water from the awa - and the setting up of a trust fund - is hugely significant and sets a precedent.
In an emergency summit yesterday, authorities reached an agreement in principle for Auckland to take an extra 75 million litres a day from the Waikato River, as an interim measure to help ease the region's drought crisis.
