Supreme Court hears Ellis appeal argument on tikanga grounds

From Midday Report, 12:14 pm on 25 June 2020

The Supreme Court is hearing submissions on whether an appeal for the convicted child sex offender, Peter Ellis, should continue after his death on tikanga grounds.

Ellis served seven years of a 10-year jail sentence after being found guilty of abusing seven children at the Christchurch Civic Crèche, where he worked in 1991.

An appeal against his conviction was lodged with the Supreme Court in July last year, but Ellis died of bladder cancer two months later.

A criminal appeal is usually terminated if the appellant dies.
