When Richard Ashcroft was a boy he loved sailing toy boats down a stream, building huts and swinging on vines in the bush.

But he's been astonished that some children these days can stumble if they're on anything but a flat path and find it difficult hopping between boulders by the river.

The landscaper decided to turn his skills and interest in native plants towards specialising in the design and build of playgrounds which mimic nature.

Country Life producer Sally Round caught up with him finishing off his thirtieth - or thereabouts - playground at Hadlow Preschool in Masterton.
