East Cape disrupted after offshore quakes, tsunami warning

From Checkpoint, 5:07 pm on 5 March 2021

It's been an extraordinary day with the government and health and emergency services dealing with the decision on whether to shift Covid-19 alert levels, and three significant earthquakes offshore.

Whole towns on the East Cape and Northland were evacuated today, after the quakes and subsequent tsunami warnings.

For the East Cape, the alert to move to higher ground came early before sunrise.

It meant widespread disruption for most of the day - schools and businesses were closed and communities gathered on hilltops to watch surges of water burst in.

Our reporter Tom Kitchin and camera operator Samuel Rillstone sent us this report from Tolaga Bay.
