"Alert but not alarmed" - that's how the Health Minister is describing New Zealand's response to the coronavirus outbreak in China.

David Clark fronted to media on Thursday afternoon to outline how the Ministry is grappling with the potential threat of the respiratory illness spreading here.

The World Health Organisation is expected to make an announcement on Friday on whether it will declare an international health emergency, after it decided today more time was needed to assess the situation.

RNZ political reporter Charlie Dreaver has the details.
