SkyCity fire: Blaze brings CBD to a standstill

From Checkpoint, 5:14 pm on 23 October 2019

It was the blaze that brought a city to a standstill. Burning out of control for more than 24 hours, the SkyCity Convention Centre blaze sent smoke and the smell of burning plastic across the city, creating widespread disruption.

Health authorities have urged residents to keep their windows closed to keep smoke out and avoid using air conditioning.

Strong winds, torrential rain and even hail hit the Auckland on Wednesday.

Fire and Emergency's Ron Devlin says that's made fighting the fire tricky. After deciding to sacrifice the convention centre's roof as they battled the blaze, fire crews worked around the clock to stop it spreading.

Five trucks have been pouring 60 litres of water a second onto the building. It's a situation many employees and construction sub-contractors are facing tonight - with no clear indication of when the fire will be out.

Checkpoint's Nita Blake-Persen and Nick Monro have the story.
