Legal action over the constitution - a sad day for Bougainville, says MP

From , 5:04 am on 26 February 2020

The President of Bougainville, John Momis, wants to run for a third term - something that is not allowed under the constitution.

A failed attempt last week by the executive to change the constitution has led it to file a Supreme Court reference, claiming that Mr Momis's constitutional rights are being denied.

But one of the MPs who opposed the change is Francesca Semoso, the women's MP for North Bougainville.

She told Don Wiseman the people of Bougainville think two terms - ten years - in power, is enough, and taking legal action in this way is a sad day for Bougainville.
