PNG landowners give ultimatum to Australian mining company

From , 5:03 am on 2 September 2019

A landowner group in Papua New Guinea says it won't back down on a demand for a mining company to overturn the dismissal of its manager.

The New Ireland landowners have given Australian company Newcrest until the 10th of September to reinstate Craig Jetson as its executive general manager.

If the company doesn't, villagers say they will shut the mine's operations on Lihir Island.

A landowner spokesperson, Newman Sana, says Newcrest has appointed Craig Jones to replace Mr Jetson and this has not gone down well with landowners.
