The outgoing director-general of the Pacific Community (SPC) says he is proud of the work he has done turning around the organisation, which is now in its 70th year.

However, Colin Tukuitonga, who finishes after seven years at the SPC next month, said he was worried about a trend away from multilateralism, which could imperil organisations such as his.

The SPC, a large organisation which does technical work in 22 Pacific countries, had turned itself around, he said.

"I think there are very good policy reasons entities like SPC should be better funded, and I think SPC delivers value for money without a doubt."

Dr Tukuitonga said he would be returning with his family to New Zealand, and had no idea what he would do next.
