Around 900 athletes have gathered on a small atoll in French Polynesia's East Tuamotu islands for the inter-island games, swelling the population at least two fold.

The participants from seven communities are taking part in eight sports over the week long competition on Makemo which kicked off on Sunday.

Officials said it's a huge logistical exercise ensuring acommodation, transport, food and water for the athletes and their supporters.

Tahiti Infos reports the games opened with a running race, with each athlete balancing a minimum of 30 kilos of fruit in the sprint for the finish.

Coconut tree climbing, handball and futsal matches are also on the programme which ends on Friday.
