Tonga eyes adjustment of judiciary

7:22 pm on 22 August 2017

Tonga's justice minister Vuna Fa'otusia says he believes it is time to appoint a Tongan to be a Supreme Court judge.

According to Radio Tonga, Mr Fa'otusia said he believed there were many young law practitioners who could begin from the magistrate positions and work their way up to become judges of the Supreme Court.

The Minister also spoke about the need for a juvenile court in Tonga as many young people have cases pending which should be dealt with in a separate court.

He said the Chief Justice Owen Paulsen had travelled to New Zealand to look into the issue, hoping there will soon be a proposal for it.
