A Papua New Guinea student leader Hercules Jim says a formal vote on the boycott of classes at the country's national university is expected tomorrow.
Students at the University of Papua New Guinea have been staying away from classes as part of a protest against the prime minister Peter O'Neill.
They want him to step down to face allegations against him.
Mr Jim said demands for the students to return to class were motivating them further to stay away.
"The prime minister has asked us to go back to class but the students are taking the stance of the prime minister in a different direction. They are taking it as a motivation. He's a good man. We respect him but we just want him to step aside and go back for questioning so that he sets a good legacy for a new generation to come up."
Hercules Jim said the the PNG Electoral Commission was expected to conduct the ballot at the university at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning.
He said the National Academic Staff Association had declared its support for the students.
