The director of the newly launched New Zealand Institute for Pacific Research, Damon Salesa, says he looks forward to sharing information with those who have the power to enact change in the Pacific.

The Institute is a collaboration between the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and the University of Otago.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has given funding to the Institute of US$5 million over five years.

Associate Professor Damon Salesa said the money allows the universities to do about four to five research projects per year.

"We'll have teams of researchers working on things like, private investment in the Pacific, labour markets in the Pacific, and so these teams will the working on their projects, and we can use that to build capacity, so to build up, train up young researchers and so on."
