PNG police arrested for armed robbery

Six Papua New Guinea policemen have been charged with armed robbery after they were caught on security cameras holding up a car dealer premises in Port Moresby.

CCTV footage showed the six, armed with service firearms, holding up security guards at the car sales yard.

They allegedly stole nearly 15-thousand US dollars in cash and other valuable items, including cigarettes, a pistol and an iPhone.

The Post Courier reports the six police are part of a mobile squad unit in the National Capital District.

The robbery happened last Sunday night when the officers, all under the influence of liquor, went to the car dealership and threatened security guards with police-issued firearms.

Police say the men were in a marked vehicle but out of uniform.

The six have been held in police custody and been refused bail.
